The Ghost Ship of the Palatine: The Burning Phantom of Block Island

Each Christmas Eve, a fiery phantom ship returns to the waves of Block Island.

Off the rocky coast of Block Island, Rhode Island, the sea holds its own ghost, a ship that burns upon the waves each Christmas Eve, its masts aflame against the dark Atlantic sky. Islanders call it the Palatine Light, said to be the spirit of a doomed refugee vessel lost to treachery and greed long ago.

The Wreck of the Palatine

In the harsh winter of the 1700s, a ship known as the Palatine sailed toward America, crowded with German refugees seeking freedom and new beginnings. But storms drove the vessel far off course, tossing it toward the wild shoals of Block Island.

According to the oldest island tales, wreckers, local men who lived by scavenging the sea, saw the ship struggling offshore. Rather than guiding it to safety, they hung false lanterns along the cliffs, luring the ship onto the rocks. When the Palatine struck, her hull shattered, and the passengers were left to drown or perish in the icy surf.

Some stories say the wreckers murdered survivors for their few belongings. Others insist they only tried to help, but the legend that endured was one of greed, betrayal, and retribution.

The Flame Returns

Weeks later, fishermen swore they saw the sea ignite where the Palatine sank, a ghostly fire that rose and vanished with the wind. And so it has been said that each Christmas Eve, when the wind howls across Block Island, a burning ship appears offshore, silently blazing before fading into the mist.

Some say it’s the ship’s spirits seeking justice. Others say it’s a warning flame to remind the living of mercy denied. But no islander who has seen it ever forgets that light upon the waves.
