Long before forests covered the earth and before rivers found their paths, there was only Sky World above and a vast stretch of water below. In Sky World lived beings of light who dwelled in harmony around a great sacred tree. This tree stood at the center of their world, radiant and life giving, its roots reaching deep into mystery.
One night, the chief of Sky World received a powerful dream revealing that the great tree must be uprooted. Among the Sky People, dreams carried sacred instruction and were never ignored. The next day, they gathered around the tree and carefully loosened the soil around its roots. As the tree was lifted from the ground, a deep opening appeared beneath it. Through that opening was only darkness.
Sky Woman, who was expecting a child, stepped forward to look into the void. As she leaned closer, the earth beneath her shifted. She lost her footing and began to fall through the opening, descending from the world of light toward the waters below.

Beneath Sky World there was no land, only endless ocean. The animals who lived in the waters looked up and saw Sky Woman falling like a star from above. Realizing she would not survive in the water, great birds rose into the sky and caught her gently upon their wings. They carried her carefully and lowered her onto the back of a great turtle who had surfaced from the deep.
But there was still no land for her to stand upon. The animals decided that someone must dive beneath the waters to gather mud from the bottom so that earth could be formed. Beaver dove first but could not reach the depths. Otter tried and returned exhausted. Loon also failed.
At last, Muskrat, small and humble, volunteered. He plunged into the dark waters and disappeared. Time passed, and the animals feared he had perished. When he finally floated back to the surface, he was lifeless. Yet in his tiny paw he held a small clump of mud.
The animals placed the mud upon the broad shell of the great turtle. Sky Woman knelt and spread the mud carefully across the shell. As she did, the earth began to grow. It spread outward in all directions, forming land where there had once been only water. This land became known as Turtle Island.
Sky Woman walked upon the new earth and gave thanks to the animals for their sacrifice and bravery. From her hands she scattered seeds she had carried from Sky World. Soon, plants began to grow. Corn rose tall from the soil. Beans climbed upward. Squash spread wide across the ground. Forests formed, rivers flowed, and the earth came alive.
In time, Sky Woman gave birth to a daughter who carried the spirit of both Sky World and the new earth. When the daughter became a young woman, she conceived twins. Within her womb, the twins were very different. One was patient and gentle. The other was restless and forceful.
When the time came for their birth, the gentle twin waited for the natural path. The restless twin forced his way into the world in a destructive manner, causing his mother’s death. Sky Woman mourned deeply and buried her daughter in the earth. From her resting place grew sacred plants that would sustain future generations.
The twins grew into powerful beings who shaped the world. The Good Mind created what was helpful and life sustaining. He shaped rivers to flow smoothly, filled the forests with animals for food, and placed the sun and moon in the sky to guide day and night. He brought order and balance.
The other twin challenged his brother’s work. He created steep mountains, rough waters, and obstacles. He introduced hardship and danger into the world. Yet through their rivalry, balance was formed. The world became a place of both beauty and difficulty, requiring wisdom and cooperation from those who would live upon it.
From this creation came the first people of the Haudenosaunee. They remembered that the earth rested upon the back of a turtle and that their world existed because of sacrifice, courage, and gratitude. They taught that balance must be maintained and that thanksgiving should come before request.
Even today, the story of Sky Woman reminds listeners that the world was shaped through cooperation between animals, spirit beings, and the forces of light and shadow. Turtle Island remains not only a place but a sacred reminder that creation itself began with compassion and balance.

The story teaches that cooperation, sacrifice, and gratitude are the foundations of life. Balance between opposing forces is necessary for harmony, and even the smallest being can change the world.
